Since Port Blair islocated a little off the Indian mainland, you won't find too many travel options to choose from. You can either fly down or sail to your dream destination. But whatever mode you pick, make travel plans well in advance and book your tickets on time.

  • Air

Daily flights connect Port Blair to Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. It takes just about 2 hours from Kolkata and Chennai and from Delhi you'll take approximately 5 hours to reach Port Blair. Usually the Delhi flights are directed via Kolkata or Chennai. You have ample carrier options as well - SpiceJet, Air India, Kingfisher and Jet Konnect - all at your service! Just remember the earlier you book the better deals you get. Veer Savarkar International Airport is the name of the airport at Port Blair. It's small size and the scattered structure of the islands are a reason for the lesser number of flights. It has just one runway!

  • Boat

If you are up for a voyage, there are about 4-6 sailings per month to Port Blair. Ships sail once in two weeks to/from Kolkata, on a weekly basis to/from Chennai and there is one sail from Visakhapatnam every month. It take an all of 56-60 hours to reach the destination. But given the unpredictable sea and weather conditions you can easily add a couple of hours to the journey. Get in touch with the Shipping Corporation of India for details atwww.shipindia.com or call Chennai: +91-0445-231401, Kolkata: +91-0332-482354 and Port Blair: +91-233347/23390. Also look upwww.and.nic.in/spsch/sailing.htm for details on fares.

Getting a ticket from Port Blair is a tedious affair. First, you have to buy a ticket/reserve a seat from the A&N Tourism (first floor), then you require a letter of approval from the Ticket Counter Office, Director of Shipping Services at Phoenix Bay Jetty. This could take a few days so it's recommended that you get a roundabout ticket from the place where you set out to travel from.

The price of bunks on the boat falls between INR 1700-1960 and could go up to INR 7640 for the deluxe cabins. Food is available at INR 150.

The are also yachts that shuffle between Thailand and Port Blair.

Although you can pick between a boat and flight as travel options, if planned well, flying down to Port Blair help save on both time and money.
