If you think that only exploring the natural beauty of a destination along with the other attractions give you a proper feel of the place then my friend, I would like to break this news to you that it is not completely true. You have to have to be a part of the celebrations of the city. They not only bring the locals together but also make you feel attached to the place that you are visiting as a part of your long delayed vacation. That is the only way to become a part of the crowd and let the place induce this raw energy oozing out of the rich culture and tradition of the place. For the same purpose, Colombo has some of the most vibrant celebrations and you are going to love all of them. Don’t believe me? Read on to believe more.

  • Buddha's Birth

One of the most vibrant celebrations in the city is the week long festivities of Buddha’s birth, death and enlightenment which fall on the same day. The festival in sinhala (traditional language of an ethnic group of Sri Lanka) is known as Vesak and is one of the few events that bring almost all of Sri Lanka together. The city is decorated with lanterns and some special display of lights which are known as Thoran. This festival generally falls in mid-May and is a week-long festival. The festivities go to a different level with many celebrations and competitions such as Lantern Competition. During this time, rice, drinks and other eatables are distributed to add on to the charm of the unity that the festival has to offer.

  • WOMAD  (World of Music, Arts and Dance) Festival of Drums

This is the festival that gives tribute to the association of drums with the island which goes 2500 years back on the timeline. The festival sees talented drummers and percussionists coming from 12 different countries, performing here showcasing their immense talent and filling the city with the rocking strikes of their drums. This festival is celebrated in March and is attended by hundreds of locals and tourists alike.

  • Esala

Another fascinating aspect of the world of festivities in Colombo is centred in the nearby Kandy. The festival season called as Esala is the highlight of the year for the residents and the tourists coming to this place. During the months of July and August. Close to the end of Esala, on the full moon day, there is a 10-day medieval celebration that takes place which is known as the Kandy Esala Perahera takes place. The celebration features grandest dance performances and processions including animals, dancers and torch-bearers. However, these ten days are broken into several smaller celebrations starting with the Kumbal Festival on July 31st, followed by the Randoli Festival, the Grand Festival, and then the Day Festival. The highest point in these celebrations is when the relic of Buddha becomes a part of the procession carried through the streets along with 100 elephants.

These celebrations are going to make you want to jive with the vibe for sure. If you still have doubts, then my friend, you will have to become a part of it and feel it for yourself. You won’t regret it. That’s for sure! So, what are you waiting for? Get going!
