Planning a trip to the Party Capital of India? Here's a quick view of the most eagerly awaited festivals and events in Goa:

  • Sunburn Festival

This electronic dance music (EDM) festival swiped the entire nation off its feet when it debuted in 2008! And since then, music aficionados from all over the globe come pouring. Usually, it's held in the last week of December with the festive fervour gripping the masses for three days! A spectacle of sorts, it brings the best from the world of food, entertainment, food and shopping. CNN hailed it as the ninth best festival in the whole world! Live performances by the biggies of music world have all the Goa swaying for nonstop whole 72 hours.

  • Feast of St. Francis Xavier

Visit Old Goa on December 3 and you are in for some pleasant surprises! Yes, you'll be amazed by the spring that Goan people have in their step during this festival. Celebrated through the entire length and breadth of Goa, albeit on different dates in December, it's marked by a flurry of fun activities, parades, masquerades, mass prayers that begin as early as 4 am. The grand feast continues for nine days to commemorate the revered saint.

The Goa Carnival is held every year before the beginning of Lent, a time of extreme restraint and abstinence for 40 days. With that in mind, a majority of Goans try to make the most of this gala period. As Lent usually falls around end of February, the carnival is a three day affair, and these dates vary from year to year. The major part of the celebration takes place in the Panjim area of the state along with Margoa, Mapusa and Vasco De Gama. Clowns, fire eaters, dancers, acrobats and a number of other types of entertainers fire up Goa during these times.

  • Christmas & New Year

In wintertime, Christmas and Goa seem to turn synonymous with each other. What else can it be with the whole of India and the world pouring in for celebrations! Goa gets painted in the most colourful hues of festivity, gearing up for Christmas and New Year in the most enthusiastic fashion that you can think of. Star-shaped lights, music riding the air, gaily-lit cottages, dressed-up churches, and most important of all, the insatiable Goan appetite for celebration marks Christmas and the coming of another year of Goan fervour.

Goa, in festival times, in packed to the hilt. Make sure you get the best Goa holiday package booked well in advance. Or else, you may have to pop open the feni by seaside! And worry not, for you'll have enough company there as well, with the crowds turning into bunches of merrymakers. Sun never sets for Goan festivals, and it's time you soak in the sunshine as well.
