In the tea country that is Munnar, perched on a vantage point, you will find the tea planter’s bungalow. Till not so long ago, the only way you could find yourself in one of those bungalows was if you worked for a plantation company. But you can now stay at a planter’s bungalow, thanks to the Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Pvt Ltd (KDHP), which controls 95 per cent of the privately owned land around Munnar. KDHP offers 4 bungalows around the town under the brand name The Tea Sanctuary (Tel: +91-4865-230561-65; Tariff: Rs 7,000, with breakfast).

You can also go for the Woodbriar Group’s Tallayar Valley Bungalow (Tel: +91-4865-257314; Tariff: Rs 5,500-6,500).Tallayar Valley is beautifully run and scores on the food. These bungalows are single-storey structures, built in the rambling colonial style, with thick walls and doors, high roofs, long passageways, fireplaces…. The crisp, fresh air, cool climate, and all around, uphill and down dale, rolling miles of many shades of green add up to a rather special experience. The clouds are ever-near, birds sing, breeze flows, a rabbit may hop across your path...Recommended.

Getting to the tea bungalows

The Tea Sanctuary bungalows are scattered around Munnar town. To get to the Tallayar Valley Bungalow, take the Coimbatore Road. About 22 km along the road, on the left near an STD booth, there’s a signboard of the Tallayar Tea Estate. A taxi charges Rs 1,200 return fare from Munnar KDHP, with its huge holdings and presence in Munnar, offers many advantages, such as temporary membership at its clubs (notably the snooty High Range Club and the stunningly located Kundale Club), access to its private fishing lake and the like.

Also for the plantation experience, try the High Range Club (Tel: 230253, 230724; Tariff: Rs 2,100-2,950) flanked by the Muthirapuzha River, with its colonial ambience and old-world charm ensconced in sylvan surroundings. It boasts a 9-hole golf course, two tennis courts, a squash court, a gymnasium, a library, a collection of shikar trophies and other relics from its hoary past. In Chinnakkanal, many resorts and holiday homes are located by Chinnakkanal Lake, a favoured backdrop for shooting Malayalam film songs. Club Mahindra (Tel: +91-4868-249224; Tariff: Rs 5,400-10,500) is beautifully located, with a restful ambience well off the beaten track; Fort Munnar (Tel: +91-4868-249311; Tariff: Rs 5,000-11,000) is classy and The Siena Village (Tel: +91-4868-249261; Tariff: Rs 3,050- 5,500) is a sprawling resort spread over a hillside.

They are quite a handful, aren’t they? Hope you will have the time of your life here. Don’t forget to send us some pictures. Also, if plantation stays are not your thing, you can also check out the other cool places to stay in Munnar.
