Answer: Hills, mountains, valleys and...? Trekking, of course! If hills are synonymous with trekking for you, then Pahalgam is your dream destination. There are plenty of trekking options, trek operators and guides and trekking gear - all geared up for a large number of trekkers who throng to Pahalgam every year. Here's a peek into the popular trek routes that originate from Pahalgam:

Day Treks

  • Pahalgam to Mamaleshwar: This is a fairly easy trek, ideal for amateurs and beginners and great for sightseeing too. The trek to one of the oldest temples in Kashmir, Mamaleshwar Temple, and back is about 4 kms long and usually takes 1.5 hr to cover at a comfortable pace.

  • Pahalgam to Baisaran: A 5 kms long trek which is totally worth every effort, since it ends at a beautiful and lush meadow, surrounded by thick forests and lofty mountains, which will sweep you off your feet. This trek would take you around 5 hrs for a roundtrip of 10 km, which you can easily cover in a day at an easy pace. Don't forget to pack yourself a little picnic!

  • Pahalgam to Aru: A 22 km roundtrip trek, this one will take you around 10 hrs to go to Aru Valley and come back to Pahalgam. This is a slightly more strenuous day trek and it might just test you for stamina and strength. Aru is a small resort village, where you're sure to experience unmatched spiritual calm and peace.

Long Treks

  • Pahalgam and Surrounding Valleys: Such treks originate from Pahalgam and can cover valleys like Lidderwat, Sonmarg and even longer ones that go up to Zanaskar and Ladakh. The most popular trek route is via the Aru Valley to the Kolahoi Glacier, which is about 35 km from Pahalgam. These treks can range between 5 to 7 days on an average, and can go up till 15 to 16 days for longer distances, usually bordering on the tougher side on the difficulty scale. Treks like these would need you to hire a skilled guide, who would also help you with camping gear and setting up camps along the way. There are many tour operators in Pahalgam who could even tailor-make your trek according to the difficulty level and duration. The most popular trek operators are:

  • Amarnath Yatra: Pahalgam is often popular among pilgrims and tourists for being the base point for the Amarnath Yatra, one of the most holy sites in India. The trek is steep and difficult and will really test your devotion, or your will to trek. This one goes via Chandanwari and Panjtarni to reach the holy cave of Amarnath. A roundtrip to the cave and back usually takes around 8 days and covers a distance of 26 km.

Pahalgam, being popular among professional and amateur trekkers, has plenty of trek tour operators offering affordable Pahalgam tour packages.

My wife and I went on a great trek in Pahalgam a few years back. Our guide was Mr. Lone Shaban. He supplied everything we needed and was an excellent host to us as foreigners. He comes highly recommended. You can reach him at +91-9419585785 or loneshaban@yahoo.com.
