Shillong in itself is so beautiful and enchanting that it just captivates you. But still if you have time in your hands and you crave to make this trip to Shillong even more memorable, then there are many nearby places where you can visit.

  • Cherrapunji
At a distance of 60 kms from Shillong, Cherrapunji holds the world record of receiving the highest rainfall in an year. This is the best place to visit if you have that adventurous streak in you. There are many natural caves and waterfalls which you can explore. These limestone caves are very well renowned for natural stalactites and stalagmites. The most famous waterfall in the region is Noh Kalikai Falls. You can rent a car or taxi from Shillong to Cherrapunji.

  • Sacred Forest
These forests are also known as Mawphlang by the local people. These groves are around 20 kms from Shillong. Earlier outsiders were prohibited from entering this forest, but now since the security has been beefed up, you can use this rare opportunity to watch many exotic species of Orchids, pines and ferns which are otherwise endemic outside.

  • Mawsynram
Mawsynram is a place 56 km away from Shillong and is known for a giant Stalagmite formation shaped into a Shivalinga and found inside a cave known locally as Mawjymbuin. This place is not only breathtakingly beautiful but also considered holy due to the Shivalinga.

Shillong has plenty to offer to its visitors. Leave behind all your worries when you plan this vacation. Just one more thing, don't forget to keep your camera, the beauty is simply too irresistible and overwhelming.
