Alleppey is synonymous with the alluring backwaters of Kerala, which forms the top activity to be done while visiting this place. Along with cruising the backwaters, you can also indulge in activities like the ones mentioned below.

  • Backwater/Houseboat Cruises
This is the must-do activity as a cruise in a "Kettuvallam" (Houseboat) through the enchanting backwaters of Alleppey is sure to rob your heart. As the houseboat moves through the palm fringed narrow canals winding through the vast expanse of paddy fields, you can see panoramic sights of the neat tiny hamlets lined up along either side of the canals and see a variety of birds and wildlife. Indulge your senses in the gentle cruise on the golden waters that will delight you and give you a first-hand impression of the charming rural lifestyle slipping by in slow motion. Even though the charges are on the high side, but the whole experience of houseboat cruising is worth every penny and gives you the memories of a lifetime.

At a time, around 8 people or a couple can board the houseboat with an on-board chef. You can take these houseboats from either DTPC (+91-477-2253308) or a multitude of private owners. Do make an advance reservation, especially during the peak tourist season (December to February) to have an enchanting experience.
  • Boat (Motor/ Canoe/ Ferries) Cruises
Motor boats are a quick and comfortable way to explore the lake, paddy fields, the village life and the interior canals of Alleppey along with the Vembanad lake. This gives you an opportunity to enjoy the panoramic views and the glimpses of life along the banks in a short time span. The DTPC organises this kind of rental during peak tourist season with several different itineraries. The motor boat costs INR 25 per hour.

For a non-guided laze through the canals, opt for Canoe boats. These can carry around 4 people per boat and make for an amazing relaxing afternoon. You can take these from many agencies present all over the town, who arrange for the canoe-boat tours of the backwaters. The canoe boat costs around INR 600 for four hours.

If you want a feel of the local backwater transport experience, try the State Water Transport boats between Alleppey and Kottayam. On your way, you can see the famous Vembanad lake and the varied landscape of the town. It costs around INR 12 for 2 hours.
  • Village Tours
Do you like Kayaking tours? Well, answer this after you go to the village tours in Alleppey and we are sure that your answer will be a ‘Yes’. The village tour involves around 5 to 6 people in a group along with a guide and an open canoe or covered Kettuvallam (houseboat). In the tour you can see the beautiful sights of the rustic and old Kerala and the indigenous life of the villagers. Along with this, you can watch coir-making, boat building, toddy (palm beer) tapping and fish farming. These trips cost between INR 300 to INR 600 depending on the time span which is usually 2 to 6 hours.
