The town of Joshimath is known as a base for pilgrimage visit and activities like trekking and skiing. So, when you are done visiting the tourist attractions of the town (which are just a handful), we give you a list of popular activities that you can do while staying in Joshimath. Just take a look:

  • Skiing

This adventurous activity takes place in Auli, which is around 16 kilometres from Joshimath. Auli is often compared with best ski resorts of the world by foreigners, and its slopes provide enough thrills to professional skier and novice as well. Skiing can be done almost all through the year, but the best and most comfortable time are the summer months (March to June), as they are very pleasant with moderate climate, with average temperature around 15°C. But if you want to enjoy the eternal bliss of snow then visit this place from December end to March.

Facilities for skiing are available from
Gharwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GMVNL) with certificate courses ranging from 4 days to 14 days, that include stay, food, ski gear charges and guide. You can even book online on the GMVN website. The contact details of their office is:

  • Trekking

Joshimath is the base for trekking to the famous Valley of Flowers, from mid-July till end-August. You can take a taxi or a bus till Govindghat, which is around 26 kilometres from Joshimath. From there, start trekking uphill to Govind Dham, which is 13 kilometres away. There is a small market here during season (May to September), and overnight accommodation is available in a tourist bungalow. There is also a forest rest house and a Gurudwara. From Govind Dham or Ghangaria, Valley of Flowers is around 3 to 4 kilometres. Camping or lodging within the Valley of Flowers is not permitted. The sight of the colourful valley filled with blooming flowers surrounded by snow-capped peaks is truly mesmerizing.
  • Cable Car

The famous cable car ropeway between Joshimath and Auli is Asia’s highest and longest cable car covering a distance of 4 kilometres. Named as ‘Gondola’, the cable car at Auli also has a Chair Lift and a Ski-Lift. The chair lift of 800 meter and Ski lift of 500 meter are used to reach the top area of the slope to start the skiing.

It takes around 15 to 20 minutes to reach
Auli from Joshimath. The ropeway has ten towers of steel structures and the ropeway helps tourists to explore the region with unique and unsurpassed experience. At a time it can carry around 25 passengers, and it moves at a speed of 3 meter per second. The ride to Auli costs INR 500 including the return journey to Joshimath.

All of these activities are truly unique and mesmerizing in their own way. So, what are you waiting for? Come and enjoy these when you visit Joshimath.
