What are the popular events and festivals in Kochi?

Culturally vibrant Kochi hosts numerous festivals. Many of them are the ones that are celebrated nationally. However, there are few that are exclusively in this city and are very enthusiastic and full of life. Important festivals and events that are celebrated in the region are listed below:

  • Onam

    Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala. It is one of the most awaited festivals in Kochi. This exciting festival commemorating the visit of King Mahabali every year, takes place during August or September according to the lunar calendar. It is time for merry making and partying among the local residents and the visitors of the city. Men and women dress up in their traditional attire. Rangoli is decorated in every household by the girls and a feeling of bonhomie fills the air.

  • Indira Gandhi Boat Race

    The Indira Gandhi Boat Race is held every year in the last week of December and is organised in the backwaters of Kochi. Gigantic snake boats are decorated beautifully in traditionally and are manned by about 125 oarsmen. All together they row to the rhythm of the songs sung by the singers on board with them on the boat. An absolutely fascinating sight that you can see only in the state of Kerala. People from all around gathers to witness this brilliant sight.  

  • The Cochin Carnival

    Beginning on the Solidarity Day of December 22, it is a ten-day long festival and is usually ended by a flag-off in dignified silence to pay tribute to the brave martyrs who died while fighting for their motherland. Ever since the Portuguese colonization this vivacious festival is celebrated in Fort Kochi. This is one of the most exciting and joy filled festival celebrated in the city and people from all around come down here to witness this vibrant carnival in Kochi.

  • It marks the western calendar’s New Year featuring games and competitions and an extravagant parade. The white colour prevails all around in this
  • festival as you will see white paper buntings flying high over most establishments and streets. Apart from adventure sports like Beach Bike Race and swimming races, there are Beach Football, Shuttle Badminton, Beach Volleyball and Ball Badminton Tournaments which are organized during the course of the festival.
