Mcleodganj has a fair number of Tibetan population and it is reflected in the cultural life of the town. Many of the festivals are marked with religious prayers of the Buddhist monks and many others with a collective participation of every community. Some important festivals and events of Mcleodganj are as given below.

  • Losar

    Losar in Mcleodganj will welcome you with multi-coloured flags fluttering to the Himalayan winds, emitting a vibe of peace and serenity from the very scene itself. Losar, the Tibetan's new year festival, is celebrated during February- March. The vibrant and energetic chhaam dance of this event is its major attraction. With distinct masks, unique headgears and costumes, this dance symbolises the victory of good over evil. If you are interested in any new culture in general or the culture of the Tibetans of Himachal Pradesh in particular, be there to witness this amazing cultural and religious revelry. A special drink changkol is prepared on this occasion and do try it to complete the celebration!

  • International Himalayan Festival

    The Dalai Lama has been revered all around the world as a personification of peace. If you are a follower of this great leader, visit Mcleodganj during December and you can consider yourself lucky. Often called the exile capital of Tibet, this town host the International Himalayan Festival to commemorate the day, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Feel the calmness of peace and the gusto of cultural amity in the cultural events of dance and music that highlights the day.

  • Budh Purnima

    This very important festival to the Tibetans is joined equally by people of other religions, especially Hindus, in celebration, making it one of the most widely- celebrated festival in the state. Held in the month of March or April with much enthusiasm and grandeur. Visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex where Buddhist monks start their celebrations at midnight. Listen to the chants and prayers as you spin the monastery wheel in union with the worship. It does awakes a sense of serene devotion and calmness, doesn't it?

  • Lohri

    As the bonfire that is synonymous with Lohri lights up in Mcleodganj, different tribes of people of this region come together to pray for abundant agricultural products. Celebrated in mid-January, the prime attractions of this festival are the folk songs and dances that continue through the night. Apart from the revelry, small stalls and carts selling handcrafted souvenirs are set up, contributing to the memories of Mcleodganj that will return with you.

The uniqueness in this culture of this tiny Tibetan town is best explored in its festive moods, its dances and its chants. Watching the zeal with which the celebrations are performed, you could not be a bystander for long. The excitement will pull you to the middle of the crowd and you will experience Mcleodganj at its best moment.
