The beautiful city of Srinagar has various festivals which are mostly celebrated by the Muslims. Srinagar is known as the paradise of India and the festivals celebrated here depict the historical, cultural and religious diversity of the city. Here are the few popular festivals of Srinagar:

  • Navroz Festival
Celebrated by the Shia Muslims in March or April, it is held for 9 days with great food items and activities like wearing fine clothes, praying at mosques, greetings and feasting at home. The main cultural drink for Navroz is Falooda which is made with milk and flavored with the essence of rose water. This festival is also dedicated to remember the birth of Prince Aly Muhammad.

  • Urs (Ziarats) Festival
A distinctive Kashmiri festival, it is held annually at the shrines of Muslim saints on their death anniversaries. This festival is not only celebrated by Muslims, but also by Hindus and Sikhs and an impressing feature of this festival is that both Muslims and Hindus do not have meat during the season of Urs festival. The collective participation of different religions and communities in the Urs celebration makes it stand out from the rest of the festivals.

  • Ramzan Festival
This is the month of fasting for Muslims during which they abstain from eating or drinking during the day and eat something only after the sunset. This festival falls in the ninth month of Islamic calendar and marks strength of charity and viewing love towards the poor and needy.

  • Eid ul-Fitr
One of main and popular Muslim festivals, it follows Ramzan, that is, it is the fast breaking festival after Ramzan. It is a festival of happiness, family reunion and to get the blessings from Almighty Allah. During the festival, Muslims wear new clothes, participate in special community prayer in the morning, meet friends and relatives, enjoy the feast and exchange wishes of Eid Mubarak or blessed Eid with each other.

  • Kheer Bhawani Festival
The main Hindu festival in Srinagar, it is solemnized at the Kheer Bhawani Temple. The temple, situated in the town of Tulla Mulla, is dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi. On the eighth day of the full moon in the month of May, the devotees of the divinity keep a fast and assemble in the here. During the festival, thousands of devotees, including both Hindus and Muslims, make the offerings of milk and kheer and it ends with 'Maha Yagna'.
