If shopping sets your heart racing, you will be in good company in one of Chandigarh’s many marketplaces- you are unlikely to emerge empty handed. Chandigarh offers unique shopping spots filled with quality women’s clothing and custom designed fashion. Venture into the shopping markets of Sector 22 and Sector 9 and you will find them lined with wall to wall clothing shops of North Indian ethnic wear, particularly Punjabi, with designs that are simple and elegant as well as heavily embroidered and bedazzling party wear. The neighbourhood is full of footwear stores, lower-priced clothing shops and kiosks. The markets are typically bustling with activity and energy typical to any Indian market, ringing aloud with the haggling and bargaining going on between shoppers and shopkeepers with the ease and grace of professional tennis players. Do explore around as these markets really involve a bit of the skills of a treasure hunter and patience of one to root around and discover all sorts of splurge-worthy outlets.

In addition to these, the other popular shopping destination is the upscale Sector 17 market. Higher-end stores mixed with local boutiques, and some of the city's coolest hotels and trendiest restaurants crowd Sector 17, city’s well heeled neighborhood. A stroll through the outer reaches of the streets will reveal many additional shops and designer showrooms. Here stores are conveniently lined together to make browsing easier. Savvy cloth shops, well stocked bookstores, funky, arty boutiques selling art, decor and jewellery, furniture stores selling antiques, mainstream branded clothing items, record stores and baked goods-all can be found here.

The best part about the market, yes there’s more, it opens into a wide, cemented, courtyard like area where a water fountain flows tempering the shopping frenzy and breaks the monotony of shopping. After a long day of shopping and browsing, take a break and settle down with a
softy (vanilla ice cream sold out here) at this blissfully relaxing place and savour and admire the view, as people go about their shopping. Some of the city's most popular restaurants, including Sagar Ratna and Sindhi’s, are here too, as well as plenty of refueling spots such as Eating Point that sells chole bhature and is considered a favorite standby of locals.

, an artisan village, located on the Chandigarh-Kalka road, near the Railway crossing, is the kind of marketplace where you can potter around and root for some truly amazing handicrafts, khadi items, handloom cloth material and other handcrafted items. If you go in the evenings you might just catch some folk, classical music or live band performance.
