Food is a major part of everyday life and it’s fun to try the local food of the places we visit, isn’t so? The beautiful backwaters of Alleppey with palm fringed narrow canals winding through the vast expanse of paddy fields has a surprisingly yummy palette of food items which are both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

Since it is a coastal city seafood is found in abundance here and is a local speciality. Also the placid backwaters is there to provide you with fresh water fishes. Prawns, squids and shrimps are cooked in different styles here. Moreover, Alleppey is in the state of Kerala, therefore you cannot miss out on the hint of coconut in most of the dishes. The staple diet here is fish and rice cooked in coconut oil which is totally South Indian. You can taste coconut in almost everything you eat as most of the food is cooked in coconut oil. Dishes like Tapioca with fish curry is quite famous in this area.

Dishes cooked here are flavoured with a myriad spices, such as clove, pepper and nutmeg, all grown locally. Apart from the regular meals at restaurants, delicious street food can be savored in the houseboats, prepared by the on-board chefs. Let’s take a look at the non-vegetarian and vegetarian tasty fares:

  • Non-vegetarian delicacies

Fish delicacies are very common in the city and if you are into non-vegetarian food you will fall in love with the place.
Meen Molagitta Curry is something that is worth mentioning among the fish delicacies. It is basically smoked water fish cooked deliciously in coconut milk with chilly in it. Smoked fish was originally popularised by the British here. Their smoked fish with steamed bread and mashed potato is still can be found in restaurants here. Fish molly is another delicacy here. It is a coconut milk sauce based curry which is almost like stew. Alleppey fish curry is a traditional curry with tomato sauce and fish tamarind and Fish Peera are chunks of fish toasted with grated coconuts with fish in tamarind sauce. Try out the Varutharacha Kozhi curry which is semi-fried chicken toasted with coconut and chilly, it is usually had with rice or steamed tapioca (cassava). You can also have famous meat dishes like Kerala beef fry with Kerala Porotta.

  • Vegetarian delicacies

Alleppey also has a lot of options for the vegetarians. Kurukku Kalan is a thick yogurt curry with toasted banana and hot rice. Banana is an integral part of the cuisine of the city. They are cultivated in huge amounts here and is delicious to taste. Crispy banana chips are a delicacy of the city. They are packed in packets of plastic and sold in the markets (which make them something that you can pick up from the markets here). Kaalan is another culinary delight made from bananas. Thoran and Pachadi are other vegetarian delicacies that you will find here in Alleppey. You will find a variety of snacks like bondas,  vadas and bhajis savoured with a cup of tea or coffee. Try the Dosa, Vada, Idli, Appam and Thali meals on a banana leaf which are really yummy.
