If you want to experience the true essence of a place, you must visit the the museums there. The museums in Srinagar exhibits harmonious fragments of the inhabitants of this enchanting valley, their culture and rich heritage. The major museum in the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir is listed below:


  • Sri Pratap Singh Museum
    The summer palace of the kings of Kashmir, once upon a time, Sri Pratap Singh Museum holds great historical importance and goes long back in time. It was converted into a museum in the year 1898. The museum preserves a huge collection of objects from the Jammu and Kashmir toshkhana. The toshkhana collection of this museum includes shawls, paintings, arms and armory, silver images, copper and jade ornaments, copper and brass utensils and Ladakhi handicrafts.
    The museum also houses some of the rare terracotta heads of 3rd century that were collected from the Buddhist site in Ushkur and numerous other moulded terracotta plaques dating back to 4th and 5th century from Harwan. One of the most famous thing in the museum is the age old brass model of Lokeshvara and a green stone structure of Lord Vishnu sitting on Garuda. Also a 5th century copper image of Buddha which has been carved in Gandhara architectural style.

    Timings: (Remains closed on Wednesdays) 10am to 5pm
    Entry Fee: INR 10 (for Indian citizens) INR 50 (for foreigners, along with presentation of Passport)
