Darjeeling has no end to the activities you can enjoy. A sojourn in Darjeeling is made memorable by the fun filled things you can do here. Following are few activities that you must try out once you are in this beautiful hill station:

  • Trekking

Did you know that the culture of trekking in India started in Darjeeling? About 80 years ago
Jesuit Rev.Fr Macdonald pioneered trekking in Darjeeling. Apparently, Darjeeling has some of the most spectacular treks to offer in India, along the splendor of its magnificent hills. The 'Singalila Trek' as popularly known, enables one to discover the passion of the Himalayan region some of which is unmarred by human. It continues through Maneybhanjang, Tonglu, Sandakphu and finally concludes in Phalut.

There are basically two trekking seasons in Darjeeling. The first one begins in the middle of
March and closes around first week of June. Be prepared for occasional showers, which is also very refreshing. The blooming flowers compensate the summer haze and offers a serene feeling.
The second season begins around last week of September and remains till December. The view during this period is excellent but it is quite cold and one may expect snowfall in certain regions.

  • Cable Car/Ropeway

One of the best ways to experience the panoramic views that Darjeeling is so famous for, is by taking a ride on the ropeway. It's also called the Rangeet Valley Cable Car because of the spectacular view of the valley around the river Little Rangeet. This ropeway of Darjeeling is fully functional since February 2012. It is a fun way to enjoy the scenic beauty of Darjeeling and completely safe.
The ropeway spans a length of 4,260 feet and is the longest such ropeway in India. The cable cars can accommodate six passengers at a time and provide a very scenic view below which include rolling hillsides filled with lush green tea gardens, valleys, mountains in Sikkim and the
    River Rangeet below.
It provides a journey from the north point of Darjeeling town to the
Singla on the banks of Ramman river. It is a 8 km journey where you can view the breathtaking milieu of the entire valley. So, to get on the cable car you will need to get to the north point which is 5km away from the main town.

  • Toy Train ride

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, fondly called the "Toy Train", is the most attractive thing in Darjeeling for tourists. The Toy Train ride is a marvelous experience that gets you closer to the Himalayas and its mysterious region. The Darjeeling Toy Train is one of the most famous narrow (2 feet ) gauge trains. In the year 1999 this Toy train service in Darjeeling was declared as UNESCO world heritage site.
The train route runs for 80 kilometers (50 miles) from
New Jalpaiguri, in the state of West Bengal, to Darjeeling via Siliguri, Kurseong, and Ghum. The rail line mounts up an arduous way through a number of amazing reverses and loops. One of the most picturesque among them is Batasia Loop, between Ghum and Darjeeling, which provides a panoramic view of Darjeeling perched on the hill and Mount Kanchenjunga in the background. The train also passes over 5 major and nearly 500 minor bridges.

However, after the suspension of the Toy Train service in the railway track damage due to a recent earthquake, it is no longer accessible. The Toy Train may resume after 2013.

Try not to miss out on the activities mentioned above once you are in Darjeeling. Even though the toy train cannot be accessed now, we can wait and hope the services resume soon to take us on a joyride around the town.
