If you happen to be in Kozhikode, there are certain sites which are not located in the immediate city but around it. Yet you cannot miss visiting them as they are amazing spots for tourist activity. A few important ones are-

  • Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary

Located in the estuary of the Kadalundi River which joins the Arabian Sea, it is approximately 25 km from Kozhikode. This natural abode is blessed with over a 60 species of birds, the prominent among them being gulls, herons, terns, sand pipers, etc. Apart from these, wildlife like fish and crabs can also be seen here.
The months of winters and spring (
December to April) are ideal for paying a visit here, during which there is an influx of migratory birds here, while summers should be avoided. Since there are hardly any eating joints in the vicinity, it is advisable to carry packed food along.

  • Kakkayam

Kakkayam is a dam which is about 45 km away from Kozhikode. The magical flowing waters, the picturesque nature around and the exotic feel the animals and birds around grant to the site makes it special.
If you have an adventurous streak to your character, you must indulge in activities like
trekking and rock-climbing, though of course through guides, whom you can seek through the local tourism office or through private operators.
    The months between
November and April will feel very pleasant here.

  • Beypore

Now this is the closest you can get to the city. Barely 10 km away from the centre of the city, this small but lovely town is located at the mouth of Beypore river. Being one of the most important ports in Kerala, it is a major centre for trading and fishing. The famous boat-building yard here is known far and wide for the huge country crafts known as ‘Urus'.
Therefore, if you are looking for
aqua-tourism , then Beypore is a pretty ideal choice, given its beautiful beaches, lush-green landscapes and ever-flowing marvellous rivers.
Indulge in picking up souvenirs in pottery and ceramics, which are unique to this place. Also there is a
Comtrust weaving centre which sells excellent quality of handloom fabrics.

Make the most of your trip to Kozhikode, and visit all that its surroundings have to offer.
