Though temples will always be on the list of sightseeing spots in Uttarkashi, if you are looking for something different and less religious, the town will not disappoint you. The Himalayas seem to have blessed this town with other non-temple sightseeing places as all of them have some connection with majestic mountain range.

  • Vishwanath Temple

Situated on the bank of river Bhagirathi and dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is believed to be built by Sage Pashurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Believe it or be sceptical about it but if you are on a trip to Uttarkashi, you will find it hard to ignore it. The divinity and for the sceptics, the confusion and mystery, of the temple increases with the legend of Lord Shiva who will shift his abode to this place after the plain Kashi or Varanasi will be submerged under water from the second part of the Kaliyuga ( one of the Hindu era described in the scriptures) onwards. The present structure dates back to 1857 AD, when the temple was renovated by Maharani Khaneti, queen of the Gharwal king Sudarshan Shah. With the green mountain and the blue river as the backdrop, the temple is surely going to invoke your soul, if not your spirituality.

  • Nehru Institute of Mountaineering

Though not a sightseeing spot in the conventional sense of the term, this place is a must-visit spot if you are in Uttarkashi. Considered to be a prestigious institute for mountaineering, not only in India but also in Asia, you will be at loss if you miss out this one. Situated on the east bank of the Bhagirathi, this institute overlooks the town and is surrounded by green mountain on one side. In terms of natural beauty, the institute is a major sightseeing spot. Do visit the famous Kailas, the Himalayan museum and have your pick of the choicest souvenir from Koteshwar. Finish off the visit with some light snacks from Maiktoli and see for yourself how the potential famous-climbers live their lives.

  • Gangotri National Park

Deodars, firs, oaks- all cone shaped greenery surround you in this western Himalayan forest. And as if this is not enough, snow leopard, brown bear, musk deer, tiger add to the forest-feeling of this park. Bird watchers, be alert. You never know when a parakeet or a bulbul will cross over your path and fly among the dense conifers. As the clock ticks and as you spend more and more minutes and hours in the park, it gets only better. You will have more chances of catching a glimpse of the 150 species of birds. By the time you return, your mind will be a collage of all the images- the floras and faunas- and it will be a collage worth framing and putting up on the wall of your memory.

A treat for your mind, for your soul and, of course, for your eyes- Uttarkashi will be an experience that will never depart from your memory. Keep it somewhere safe, cherish it forever for it is a treasure that will always shine.
