What are the popular things to do in Kovalam?

0 people found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

If you were asked this question, you would promptly reply ‘several beach activities and ayurveda oil massage sessions’. After all that’s what Kovalam is famous for. Even the pictures say so! We hear you, but that’s not all that Kovalam has got to offer. Keep reading to know more about your options, so that you don’t miss out on any potential adventure.

  • Beach activities

This one is a no brainer, so we decided to start with the obvious. Take a book along to read while you sunbathe (did you pack your sunscreen?). Or stroll along, combing the beach for shells, occasionally dipping your feet in the water. There are a number of lifeguards positioned on the Lighthouse beach and the Hawah beach, so swimming is quite safe if you keep away from the red flagged zones. The waves and the undertows can be deceptively strong and can carry you miles away before you even realise it, so caution is advised. Those looking for a bit more activity can indulge in a game or two of tags or beach volleyball.

  • Adventure

Kovalam offers many wonderful opportunities for the adventurous people. The Kovalam bay is ideal for Kayaking, Catamaran rides and water skiing. Surfing is another popular activity here with fast and powerful waves, with the swell size starting at 3 to 5 feet and holding up to 10 feet. You can also try out the water scooters and banana boat rides here. Due to the recent building of an artificial reef, there has been an increase in snorkelling activities in the area. The reef harbours many interesting varieties of fishes and corals. If fishing holds a special place in your heart, then you’ll be glad to know the Kovalam is considered to be an Angler’s paradise. Surfboards, fishing rods and boogie-boards are available for rent at the beach itself.

  • Ayurveda massage therapy

A trip to Kovalam is incomplete without indulging in some
Ayurvedic hot oil massages or aromatic oil baths. Say goodbye to your stresses and hello to a new rejuvenated you! With its incomparable natural beauty of beaches, white sands and coconut groves, you will never feel more relaxed and closer to nature. There is a number of Ayurvedic spas and health centres scattered around all the beaches. Many resorts have their own spas with staff specialised in Ayurvedic massages. • Astrology

Astrology has very important cultural and religious significance in Kerala. It is believed that Astrology is an important part of Vedas (ancient Hindu scriptures) and is the most dependable way of figuring out the influences of the heavenly bodies on humans and their mundane affairs. Kovalam has a number of astrologers available (you have to ask around for a good one). You can get a consultation done from licenced astrologers to get interesting insights to your life.

  • Shopping

Though Kovalam is not exactly a shopping destination; still you can buy a lot interesting souvenirs coming from all over India. From Kashmiri shawls to Rajasthani puppets and even local handicrafts like lamps, silk clothing, spices etc., you will find a mind boggling variety of stuffs to check out.

  • Eating

Four words. Fried chicken and Seafood. We don’t have the right adjectives to describe the taste, so we are going to stick to - Simply awesome! Go to Fusion or Beatles on the Lighthouse beach. For vegetarians, try out restaurants like the Suprabhatam, Sea face Dosa camp and Bethel for amazing local keralite cuisine. If you don’t feel like having a full meal, you can opt for a coconut drink or fruit salads sold on the beaches. The German bakery has good breakfast options and so many varieties of cakes and pastries that your sweet tooth will tingle with joy. Imagine sitting on the beach facing the sea, munching from a plate of goodies, with the wind tossing your hair...ah! Simply heaven on earth!

  • Exploring

Taking into account the cultural heritage of Kerala, you are bound to come across some cultural programmes showcasing classical dance forms like the Mohiniattam and  Kathakali, Kerala martial art form called the Kalaripayattu, folk dances such as the Oppanna and other ritualistic folk arts like Panchavadyam (orchestra of 5 instruments) and Pulikali (Tiger dance).

You can also meander through the narrow walkways between the shops and restaurants which will eventually open into the rice paddy fields. With clusters of coconuts and date palms in the background, and watery fields of paddy in the foreground, this will show you a completely different side of Kovalam, that only a few tourists get to enjoy. There is a route to the
Hawah Beach from the Kovalam main street, which is bordered by numerous tropical vegetation, and passes by local house leading to the beach. A good place to get lost in.

Now, aren’t you glad you read this? With so much more to do and see here, don’t limit yourself to just the beaches and spas. Maybe you should reconsider your decision to spend just a single night here.
