Holidays should always be a time to shed off all your worries and dive in headfirst into a huge pool of fun. And Kozhikode promises you nothing less. Full of towering mountains, sparkling streams and lakes, tempting beaches, wildlife reserves, quaint unexplored villages, local bazaars, there's so much to do and explore, you would definitely want to extend your stay.   • Nature lovers

    For all you tree huggers and Wildlife enthusiasts, we present you with the Kalalundi bird sanctuary. Located amidst the numerous hills in the area, this sanctuary sits on a beautiful estuary created by the Kalalundi river. Home to almost 60 species of different migratory bird species, Kalalundi is also known for its impressive collection of crabs, mussels and fishes. Try visiting the place in the months of December to April and in the early dawn hours so that you have better chances to view these treasures. Carry your lunch as going all the way back to town for a meal would take a lot of time, which you can better spend exploring the sanctuary.

    You simply cannot miss the houseboat (or the
    Vallyaparamba, as the locals call it) ride on the virgin backwaters in this area. Elathur and the Kallal river are popularly chosen for this trip. You can stop at the small quaint villages established on the river banks and get to know the way of the locals. Tourists have different cruise options provided by the Bekai boat stay, which organises these backwater trips. The prices start at Rs 1,750 for six people in the short cruise package, the duration of which is one hour. For sunset cruise, which lasts from 4:30pm to 6:00pm, the prices start at Rs 3000 for six people. Longer cruise packages are also available.

    If thrill and adventure are you favourite words, you will get ample opportunities to put them to practice in Kakkayam, offers a multitude of choices in trekking and rock climbing. Making your way through tricky spots, lose rocks, river paths and waterfalls, you will indeed have a challenging and muscle flexing adventure.

    So you are not crazy about hanging from a mountain cliff or getting lost in a jungle. Cool, we get that. In that case, let us direct you towards the museums and art galleries that this city has to offer. The Art Gallery of Kozhikode houses the paintings of the famous painter Raja Ravi Reddy, depicting the lives and the simplicity of the Keralite locals. The V.K Menon museum and the Kirtads can be some interesting choices if you wish to learn more about the history and culture of the place.

    The more pious hearted, can check out the
    Tall Temple(built by a Zamorian, it is one of the most ancient temples to be found), Pishakarikavu (dedicated to Goddess Bhagvathy and host to the famous elephant procession during the festive season of march/April) and the Parsi Anju Aman Baug (dates back to 200 years when the parsis settled in Kozhikode)

    The Dolphin's point, Thikotti lighthouse and the Nehru Planetorium are some other suggestions you might like.

    Do not even think of leaving this places without checking out the Sweet street. As the name suggests this places is littered with shops selling local sweetmeats, the most famous of them being the Halwa.
