Sikhism is definitely the predominant religion in Jalandhar but it has its own share of unique temples, mosques and churches. Some of the important places of worship in Jalandhar are as follows:

  • Devi Talab Mandir

This old temple is a beautiful structure with a river running around it. There is also a very popular Kali Temple here that thousands of devotees visit occasionally. With recent renovations, a model of the Amarnath Yatra has also added to the structure. Every December a musical festival called Hariballabh Sangeet Sammelan is celebrated on the temple grounds. This is your chance to be audience to some of the most renowned classical music artists.

  • St. Mary’s Church

Located in the Jalandhar Cantt area, St Mary’s Church is a symbolic representation of secular India. Perhaps this is the reason why this ancient structure from the pre-partition days was re inaugurated in 1989 on Diwali. It was initially dedicated to St. Patrick and is the just place to be for Sunday service. It’s a simple church with beautiful art work.

  • Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi

The Gurdwara stands on the exact spot where Guru Har Gobind (6th Guru) visited and Shaikh Darvesh (muslim saint) met for a spiritual dialogue. The Gurdwara also houses an ancient copy of the sacred Guru Granth Sahib handwritten by the Baba Deep Singh. Partake of the blissful serenity here, away from the noisy city life.

  • Imam Nasir Mausoleum and Jamma Masjid

The colossal structure of the Imam Nasir Mausoleum and the Jamma Masjid are positioned right in the city’s centre. The mausoleum named after a saint is a white structure which is hard to miss in the city bazaar. Bang next to it is the Jama Masjid. These grand structures are 800 years and 400 years old respectively.

  • Shiv Mandir

Near the Imam Nasir Mausoleum is this ancient temple said to be built by the Nawab of Sultanpur Lodhi. Shiv Mandir is a beautiful mix of Hindu and Muslim architecture. It is believed that a muslim ruler built this as an expression of apology for disrespecting a hindu girl. This girl was a strong believer in Lord Shiva. Situated at Gur Mandi, you must not miss a chance to visit this temple when you are near the market place. You can visit this temple anytime but Shiv Ratri is a special time to offer prayers.

There is also the Singh Sabha Gurdwara and the Sodal Mandir where people pray to a child saint. Remember that you need to remove your shoes and cover your head in most Gurdwaras. Also, dress appropriately when you visit these religious places in Jalandhar.
