Driving to Leh from Manali and vice versa is slightly tricky, especially for amateur drivers. It is best to have some experience in hill driving before you set out to traverse difficult mountain terrains. Additionally, it also depends on the season in which you take this trip
Here are a few basic trips to keep in mind while on the Manali - Leh highway.

1. Overconfidence may not be the best thing when on these roads. It's best to be cautious, especially at sharp turns and extremely narrow roads.

2. It is suggested to have a fellow driver so that you don't tire yourself out. Alternate driving will let the driver rest before taking the wheel again.

3. Know your car extremely well. Snowfield conditions can highlight any existing minor faults, particularly in the electrical system. So it is essential to thoroughly check your vehicle before leaving home. Have your tyres, battery, brakes, cooling system, engine and windscreen inspected.

4. You'll need to match the amount of anti-freeze to the capacity of the coolant system. If this isn't done and the coolant freezes, the engine will block and radiator may crack, leaving you stranded with an expensive repair bill. Most modern cars use coolant with wide temperature capabilities, but you'll need to check with your service provider if special coolant is needed.

5. Ensure you allow enough time for the trip. Weather can change quickly in mountainous areas, with a corresponding effect on the roads and travel speed. During winter, do not forget to attach snow chains to the tyres or you will find yourself going backwards instead of upill. Also prepare yourself to stop on the highway for long hours during landslides.
