Guruvayur is a pilgrim’s desired destination. The air itself is so full of sacred vibes that you just can’t escape the religious fervour that has been a part of this town since centuries. Let us have a look at some tips and guidelines you can follow here and make your visit more fruitful.

  • Weather and Nature

The winter months between December to February
are most preferred by tourists, given the favourable weather conditions. Yet, do remember to pack in some light woollens which will do for the moderately cold climate here. The months between August to November are also preferred by many travellers as these are the months of festivities.
  • Journey

If you have plans to visit some other destination in India immediately after your trip to Guruvayur, and the train is preferred mode of travel, then it’s wise to make your bookings from Thrissur Railway Station as it is connected to most major cities in the country.
  • Stay and Eat

Guruvayur is predominantly a religious city. So liquor is prohibited here. Therefore, avoid indulging in drinking or seeking other nightlife options here.
Since Guruvayur is a small town, there aren’t many options for accommodation. Therefore, it's wise to make inquiries in advance and even make bookings before you set foot here.

  • Sightseeing

It must be noted that non-Hindus are prohibited to enter the Guruvayur Temple. Mobile phones or any other sort of electronic devices are strictly banned inside the complex. Also, there is a strict dress code for both men and women. Men must remain topless with Kerala Mundu (only white/saffron) while women are supposed to wear sarees or pyjamas and kurtas.
Do not forget to pay your homage to Lord Shiva at Mammiyoor Temple before you leave this town. Tradition has it that anyone who comes visiting Guruvayur Temple must visit this temple also before stepping out of the town in order to complete his pilgrimage.
Do keep in mind that Guruvayur is not in essence a nocturnal city. So, staying outdoors till late hours in the night might invite some unwanted security issues. As the city population goes to sleep by around 11 pm, it’s wise to keep indoors after that.
Most temples in Guruvayur have certain specific opening and closing timings for visitors. Make sure you have confirmed about them before you set out for these sites. For instance, Guruvayur Temple remains closed to
darshan-seekers from 2 pm to 4 pm and from 9 pm to 3 am in the morning.
  • General

Lastly, do not forget to save some crucial contact numbers in your phonebook.
    Highway Police: +91-99465-00120
    District Hospital, Thrissur: +91-487-2427383
