Answer: Do you think holidays are a time to step out of the routine and get your adrenaline pumping? Or are you one of those travellers who likes to indulge in more calm, peaceful and laid back activities? Take heart, because Pahalgam has a little something for everyone. Choose from the following activities that you can undertake while in Pahalgam:

  • Trekking

Are the absolutely serene nature, beautiful mountains and vibrant valleys calling out to you? If hills are synonymous with trekking for you, then Pahalgam is your dream destination, one of the best ways to explore the true character of nature. There are plenty of trekking options, trek operators and guides and trekking gear - all geared up for a large number of trekkers who throng to Pahalgam every year. You can opt for day treks to Mamaleshwar Temple, Baisaran and Aru Valley or choose longer treks to Lidderwat, Sonmarg or even Zanaskar and Ladakh. With options galore, you can choose to take these treks even if you're an amateur trekker.

  • Fishing

A river, surrounded by beautiful mountains and fresh, clean air. Does it make you want to lazily lounge about and indulge in some laid back fishing? Pahalgam might just be the place for you then, with the Lidder River offering great opportunities to angle and fish for brown river trout. Home to plenty of fish, even an amateur fisherman would be able to get a good catch in the swirling waters of this scenic river. A good fishing season usually lasts between April and September.
A permit is compulsory for fishing in Pahalgam, which can be taken from the
Tourist Reception Centre at Srinagar on your way into Kashmir. These permits are given for a maximum period of three days at a time on a first-come-first-serve basis. The permit includes a daily rent for fishing rods, etc. It also mandatory to be accompanied by a guide on these fishing trips and you can only catch a maximum of 6 fish per day.

  • Golfing

All sightseeing and no play makes you a dull traveller, does it? Tee off in Pahalgam's beautifully maintained 9 Hole Golf Course, which will soon be extended to an 18-hole one. Shaded by tall pine trees and the misty air of the region to keep you company, you can ‘putt' together with locals here and experience a true, Kashmiri bond. Several hotels and even the state government organise golfing championships every summer here to encourage the sport as well as the tourism industry of the town. You can buy light refreshments, hire a caddy, golf clubs and other golfing equipments near the gate of the golf course, so don't worry about carrying these things with you. There is an entry fee for tourists, apart from the rental charges for golfing equipment.

  • White Water Rafting

Get that adrenaline pumping and energise each cell in your body. The Lidder River offers a great opportunity for some exciting river rafting, which is carried out during the months of March to September. Each rafting trip is about 3 km long and takes anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes to complete. The rafting boat can take upto six passengers, and these trips can be booked in advance with rafting operators in Pahalgam. If you're worried about skill and training, you need not. There are trainers who are well versed with the waters of the river and will give all the required training for a safe, yet exhilarating adventure. Be sure to compare rates with at least two tour operators to get a good deal!

With so much to do, you're sure going to want to extend your holiday at Pahalgam. Happy adventure-filled vacations!
