Populated by descendants of storied civilizations, rich in culture and safe to explore, Tiruchirappalli offers places full of discoveries for curious travellers. Some of the top things that you could do while in Tiruchirappalli are:

  • Shopping

If you are an antique enthusiast, with an eye for traditional and antique things, then rooting through the city’s flea markets should be right up your alley. Tiruchirappalli has a few streets where antiques are traded in and sold. If you are lucky, you might just come across artifacts belonging to the different dynasties that reigned the land in their times. However, be very careful as shady dealings are abound and you can be easily conned by what looks like a genuine artifact, but is really is a fake piece undergone various treatments to appear genuine. At times antique and art collectors of Tiruchirappalli hold sale or trade in parts of their own collections either in the flea or curio shops, so keep a lookout for them when you head over for your treasure hunting.

To complete the shopping experience explore the Chinna Kadai Street, that runs along the Uchchi Pillaiyar Rock temple. The street is packed with clothes and jewellery, punctuated with restaurants and snack bars. If south silk saris are on your shopping list then head over to Saradhaas, Laxmi Silks (further down the street beyond the Uchchi pillaiyar temple) and Chennai silks store. With a tradition of jewellery making, you will come across truly exquisite and incredible ornaments in the jewellery shops of Tiruchirappalli including ancient as well as traditional jewellery items, typically set with stones and rubies. For some truly great finds, visit Mangal and Mangal and Gopaldas; they carry a good collection of traditional jewellery designs.

  • Trekking

You'll need a spirit of adventure and an enjoyment of local lores and myths to trek the paths that lead you through monuments, rocks and boulders, for this to be the right part of town for your base. Tiruchirappalli has a number of trekking points that lead you right through the evergreen forests that outline the Eastern Ghats. Thalamalai hills  (70 km from the city) Kolli hills, part of the Eastern Ghats (100 km from the city) are some of the more popular trek routes near Tiruchirappalli. There are a couple of trekking organizations, like Trichy trekkers, that frequently organize trekking trips for city natives and you could book a place for yourself in one. The trek takes you through ancient archaeological sites and offers a lush tangle of flora and fauna and a region of cultural wealth. These trekking trails often don’t factor on most traveler’s radar, being off the track. But once you make the effort, you can wander freely, listening to the forest’s sounds and imagining the dynasties and armies that may have once assembled here before setting off to battle.

  • Heritage exploration

The city of temples label does little justice to the veritable archaeological zone Tiruchirappalli is. True, temples are the focal points, but the temples and their surrounding regions tell a thousand stories of the different, once mighty, civilizations that lived and breathed here and waged wars. From Rockfort, the 3.8 billion years old rock, older than the Himalayas on top of which is built the Rockfort temple to the Sri Rangam island where Sri Rangam Ranga Nathar Temple is based, the largest temple complex in the world, you will have a time travel experience. As you meander through the temple complexes, passing by the inscriptions and majestic sculptures and idols, you will be filled with an incomparable sense of heritage.

A medieval fairytale in the flesh, Tiruchirappalli has a beautiful, spiritual sort of serenity, felt intensely in its temples and makes you want to go out and seek it in the city and in yourself.
