Offering much more than a regular tourist destination, Ahmedabad woos tourists with an intensity that’s rare. While the city in itself is dotted with attractions of immense cultural, architectural and historical value, there is plenty to see around it. If the explorer in you is all set with a compass in hand, you’ll find plenty of surprises like:

Turn the steering wheel to the south west of Ahmedabad and some 7 kilometers down the road, a breathtaking site will welcome you. Hailed as the Acropolis of Ahmedabad, Sarkhej houses the very famous Sarkhej Roja Mosque. Once spread across 72 acres, encroachment has shrunk its stretches to just 32 acres now. Nevertheless, this architectural wonder created by the two Persian brothers, Azam and Mu'azzam, is still a marvel to look at. This mosque, dedicated to Saint Ganj Baksh, is often said to be a timeless entity for the layout of it is uniquely mesmerising. Plus, you can see a perfect fusion of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The importance of this structure, both for its design as well as the religious fervour for Saint Ganj Baksh’s tomb, will leave you entranced.

Adalaj is a quaint, little town, located some 19 kilometers to the north of Ahmedabad. Reaching Adalaj is easy as it’s just off the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway, and you will be more than glad to visit it. The major attraction here is the Adalaj stepwell, a structure of immense beauty. Built in 1499 by Queen Rudabai, this well runs several stories deep. The main corridor to the well takes you a whopping five storeys down! One tip that you can tuck up your sleeve is to go to the place in bright sunlight, for the intricately designed motifs and figures seem to be suffused with a brilliant energy then. Almost every inch and space on the walls is adorned by some exquisite work - don’t miss the magic.

A pleasant 2 hour drive will have you bask in the glory of the golden era that swept over Gujarat in the realm of Solanki dynasty. It is an experience beyond words when you sit under the vanguard of the Sun God in the famous temple at Modhera. It’s one of the best constructed devotional places in western India. The entrance, with its carved arches, will usher you to the ground that houses 108 shrines, a breathtaking sanctum sanctorum and carvings of marvelling beauty on the walls. Experience the bliss of sheer beauty as River Pushpawati gurgles by the side of temple. And if all the roaming around makes you hungry, grab a quick bite at the PWD cafeteria here.

If there’s more exploration on your mind, don’t forget to check out Patan that lies some 130 kilometers to the north west of Ahmedabad. It has monuments of rare architectural brilliance, including Rani Ki Vav, Sahastralinga Talava, the famous temple of Panchasara Parasvanath, amongst a whopping number of 100 Jain temples! You can also explore the ruins of an ancient temple at the nearby town of Unjha. A quick trip to these amazing places will be the perfect icing for your trip to Ahmedabad. Satiate the explorer in you, explore!
