Leh is undoubtedly beautiful and enchanting, offering a chance to experience amazing calm and tranquility. But the story doesn't end here. There are several places around Leh that you can explore for a complete holiday experience. Here are a few popular places for you to visit:

  • Pangong Tso

Situated at 145 km from Leh, this place is 5 hour drive from the main town. Sprawling between the Indo-China border, this lake is situated at an altitude of 4350 meters. Out of its 18 km long area, about one fourth falls within India. Watch all hues of blue and observe them stretch on to the skies, surrounded by the brown barren mountains and be marvelled by the pristine beauty of nature.

The Pangong Tso is surrounded by glistening white pebbles, making it all the more beautiful. Polluting the place with your trash is a
strict no no here, so make it a point to pack your waste and take it back. Tea stalls serving maggi and snacks are located here for mini bites, so be mentally prepared for simple food.

With its aesthetic beauty and picturesque surroundings, the drive to Pangong Tso, also known as
Pangong Lake is a mesmerising experience. Encounter an old world charm when you see locals dressed in their traditional finery, walking their yaks to a green pasture for grazing. While driving down to this place, you also cross the Chang-la pass which is touted as the second highest motorable road in India at a height of 5425 meters.

  • Nubra Valley

Located at a distance of 160 kms from Leh, the Nubra Valley is a place of beauteous scenery, with the lush green valley standing in sharp contrast to the lofty barren mountains. The meeting place of Nubra and Shyok Rivers, this valley divides the Karakoram Ranges and Ladakh. It is the irrigation of these rivers that the villages located nearby achieve their swaying fields in this area which is otherwise a mountain desert. As this is a Buddhist dominated society, one can visit Samstanling Monastery and Diksit Monastery when here. The 35 meter tall statue of Maitreya Budhdha is intricately decorated and with the barren colourless hills in the background, it is a divine sight.

A verdure of green in the arid
Karakoram Range, Nubra Valley is strategically located near the Khardungla Pass and Siachen Glacier. To travel to this place, tourists require an Inner Line Permit, obtainable in Leh. You can take a long walk and enjoy the gushing and splashing river Shyok, or simply sit down by the riverside to catch a fish or two.

  • Khardungla Pass

Gateway to the Nubra Valley, the Khardungla Pass is located at a height of 5,359 meters and it is claimed that this is the highest motorable road in India. Opened in 1988, the Khardungla Pass is Mecca for most biking enthusiasts in India and the ride till up here is considered one of the most exhaustive and taxing ones. Decked in a coat of thick snow all year long, this place is a must visit for the tourists of Leh for its natural beauty and splendid views of the snow capped Himalayan Ranges. Engage in some fun in the snow when here or take a yak ride but make sure you don't overwork yourself as the oxygen levels at these heights are really low and being exhausted can cause health problems.

It is advisable to carry heavy woollens and some chocolates when heading here. While the clothes help you battle the extreme cold, the chocolates will act as energy injections which your body will need (thanks to the breathlessness and exhaustion you will feel on walking just a few steps). Sunscreens and sunglasses are other necessities, which will help you deal with the glare of the ice over here. Pack up all this and a few snacks (who doesn't like to munch?) and head to Khardungla Pass for a magical experience.

Isn't it time to hit the roads now? Tank up on fuel, get those wheels checked for air and head out to explore the quaint places near Leh. Have a wonderful time, click a lot of pictures and most importantly, take back beautiful memories.
