Jamnagar has always been one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Gujarat. Though there are no strict guidelines for travellers, a quick glance over the given tips will add to the fun of your desert odyssey:

  • Stay

The most useful tip for a traveller to this city is to practice general etiquettes, like following the customs while visiting a religious attraction. A strict code of conduct is followed in most of the temples and mosques and it’s better to be in sync with those. Apart from that, keep in mind that Jamnagar is in a dry as well as a white state. This clearly implies that alcohol and any non-vegetarian product is off limits. Flouting any of these rules may call for legal action against the offender.

Make sure your hotel reservations are done well in advance, especially if you are going anywhere between October to March. With all the major festivals, including Navaratri, falling between these dates, most of the hotels will be booked. One of the most important advices is to make enquiries if your hotel allows liquor. Only a few selected hotels are allowed to serve alcohol, so decide wisely when you make reservations. Though the ban of alcohol intake is stringent for Indians, foreigners and NRIs also need to get alcohol permits.

  • Travel

Summers should be stricken off your travel list, for heat waves are nothing less than intense at Jamnagar. Isn’t playing a baked mud pie the last thing on your mind? Also remember that apart from the prohibition on alcohol intake, you won’t also be allowed to carry it while travelling. Needless to say, bootlegging is an offence!

  • Clothing

Pack a whole lot of clothes made of light and easy fabrics, like cotton, for a trip to Jamnagar. It’s also advisable that you opt for full sleeved, loose clothes, as the sun is often at its glaring best even during winters. Moreover, Gujaratis are considered to be a conservative society so you must know how to tread the fine line between comfort and style.

Residents are a friendly lot but quite sensitive when it comes to their religion and culture. And the one tip that’ll serve you the best is to respect the local beliefs and rules. It’s a way of life at Jamnagar.
