While planning big things we often miss on the tiny, little details which are really important while traveling. Do not worry, it is human to err. Here are a few tips that you would like to make a mental note of before you set out the the small town of katra.

  • Climate

The climate of Katra fluctuates between -14°C and 40°C around the year. If you plan to visit in the summers, light winter clothing will be enough. However, if you want to travel during winters, it is advisable to carry those heavy bulky woolens which you keep for the chilliest of times. Travelling to Katra is not advisable during monsoons and the hill sides and tracks become slippery and dangerous during these times.

  • Yatra

While you may want to challenge yourself for the arduous uphill trek, be warned it is not an easy one. In case you are physically unfit or fall short of breath easily, it is advisable to hire a mule and reduce your bodily burden. If you can shell out a little more, taking the helicopter ride to the Shrine is a good idea. Watch out for the touts who promise you unbelievable deals, what is too good to be true, generally isn't true.

  • Money

We understand its safer to carry electronic money on holidays but this may not be the most practical thing to do when in Katra. When you pay for the mules, the prasad and other small things, you will require hard cash, so do make it a point to carry some.

  • Dining

Alcoholic drinks and non vegetarian food are not served in Katra as it is a pilgrimage site. You will find a lot of places by the name of Vaishno Dhaba, which serve pure vegetarian food without onion or garlic, for the interest of the pilgrims.

  • Hotels

It might get crowded during festivals like Navratra in Katra. In case you wish to visit during those times it is advisable to get your bookings well in advance. Also make sure you lock up your luggage in the room to secure it, many hotel owners just take charge of luggage without giving you rooms.
