What are the various ways to reach Alchi?

0 people found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

The only way to reach Alchi is by road via Leh. So this village is only accessible during the summer tourist season. There are regular taxis, cabs and buses which go back and forth between these two destinations. So how are you going to reach Leh?

  • By Air

If you choose this option, you will be stepping in one of the world’s most highest Airports. For that very reason, you might want to spend a day or two here to get acclimatised to the height and low oxygen levels. Leh is a pretty place, you will like spending time here. There are direct flights to Leh from many of the major cities in India like Pune, Delhi, Srinagar, Jammu and Goa. From there it is a short drive of 3 kilometres to reach the main town, where you can get a bus or hire a jeep to Alchi.

  • By Rail

This one is going to be a long journey as you would have to take a train to Pathankot or Chandigarh, from where going to Leh translates into a three day ride. Both these stations are well connected by rail to all the major metropolitans and cities of India. Unless you really love the constant chugging of trains, we would suggest you skip this option.

  • By Road

This is the most popular route taken by tourists as the whole drive to
Leh is a beautiful one. You can reach Leh via two road routes, one joining in from Srinagar at the west, and the other from Manali in the south. It is recommended to stop over for a night in Manali if you plan to drive down to Leh from Delhi, as the stretch is too long to cover in a go.

If you plan to go here by bus, you can try the state operated facility running from
Srinagar, Manali or Delhi to Leh, in between June and October. If you are headed here from Delhi, these buses stop over for the night at Manali and Keylong (Lahaul- Spiti) and cost up to INR 700 generally. You can also opt for a private bus, which are a little heavy on the pockets but then that’s the price of comfort.

    Reaching
Leh from Manali by jeep is a much faster option. While the bus will take about two days, you can land up in Leh from Manali in a span of 22 hours if you take a shared jeep. From Srinagar, you can reach Leh via Kargil where you can spend a night and then head to Leh. While the jeep from Srinagar costs about INR 900, from Manali you have to shell out about INR 1500.

    The biking route from
Manali to Leh is often dubbed as Biker's Paradise for its adventure and thrill. Hire a bike at Manali (Hardev Motors, Telephone: +91-98160-82825) and take the Manali- Jispa- Pang- Leh route, stopping overnight at all these places for the ride of your lifetime!

Once you reach Leh, there is a bus that goes from Leh to Kargil which stops at a bridge where the road turns off. Alchi is a 4km walk from there. Sometimes you can hitch a ride. Or you can hire a Jeep or a Taxi from Leh itself, for a less eventful journey. There are Mountain biking tours available from Leh which can be combined with the Buddhist monastery festivals (June to August).

We hope you have a great stay in this almost unexplored village and create wonderful memories during your stay.
