Disjointed from the mother country, Lakshadweep is not hard to reach but is definitely not the one with a lot of options. You can either take a plane or a boat to reach the islands which in a way is the most intriguing part of a trip planned to this beautiful destination. Let's look at these two ways of reaching in detail:

  • Air

Kingfisher and Air India fly daily flights from Kochi to the airstrip located on the Agatti Island, which is by the way, the only one in Lakshadweep. Also, Kingfisher Red provides with non stop flights daily from Bangalore to the island.

  • Ship

The MV Tipu Sultan, MV Bharat Seema, MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy operate between Cochin and different islands in Lakshadweep. This trip takes around 14 to 18 hours that depends on the destination island. All the four ships are basic 1960s-era ferries but you will definitely find them well maintained and fairly comfortable.

    Among the options,
Tipu Sultan is occasionally held to be the best that offers three classes of accommodation, which are A/C cabin, A/C reclining seats and deck along with a cafeteria, snack bar, and an upper deck promenade. Return fares for it are around INR 3800 in A/C seats. This is the cheapest class available for different packages.

Something that you have to keep in mind is that all the published sailing schedules are always subject to sudden changes keeping the technicalities and practicalities in mind.

You can also try occasional cruises which operate directly from

Just two ways of reaching the coral destination sounds a little discomforting, right? But don't worry, once you are there, you will love every bit of it. There is no doubt about that.
