Bali-your destination for a bohemian escape, island style, where you skip out on standard urban smog for sunshine, breezy ocean air, and rustic, rice paddy esque digs. Called the last paradise by the yesteryear hippie culture, even today Bali is as close to paradise a place on Earth can get. A stunning member of the Indonesian archipelago, Bali is tucked away within the Indian Ocean, lying in the South Pacific. There is an array of means to reach this incredible island, which are:

  • By Air

One of the ideal and fastest ways to reach Bali is in a plane. Denpasar Airport, aka Ngurah Rai International Airport is 13 km (8 miles) southwest of Denpasar and has flights from Taipei, Bangkok, Jakarta, Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Seoul link it to the rest of the world. Travelling from India? Your flight will, regardless of the city you take off from, have a layover at Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong or Singapore, from where you will then take the connecting flight to Bali.

  • By Water

Being a port call for many cruise liners that make their way through South East Asia, you can also go aboard a cruise liner to Bali. From within Indonesia, you can take any one of the many ferries, boats and Pelni ships (national shipping line for long distance water travel) that leave for Bali from Java, Sumbawa, Banyuwangi and other neighbouring regions. Between Java and Bali, the distance on a ferry is about 30 minutes and will cost you about Rp 6000 for an adult while Rp 4,500 for a child. The ferry runs regularly between Ketapang in East Java to Gilimanuk, situated on the western tip of Bali. From Lombok, a number of ferry services ply regularly between Lembar in Lembak to Padangbai or Benoa in Bali.

  • By Road

For a trip that takes you through the Indonesian countryside bus journey to Bali is another option before you. With better roads, the bis malam or night bus from Java to Bali is now faster than the train. There are air-conditioned buses from Surabaya to Denpasar, a distance of 410 km, which takes about 10 to 12 hours, and from Yogyakarta to Denpasar, a distance of 691 km, which is a one day trip. Most Indonesians travel this way, but requires patience and tolerance of cigarettes and noise. Lorena Mercedes Benz fleet buses run a number of services and are considered to be the best in Bali; it will cost you a little more but deluxe services and a toilet is included. The cost begins at Rp 3,50,000 per person one side.

  • By Rail

There are several express trains from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta to Banyuwangi, Yogyakarta to Surabaya and Surabaya to Banyuwangi. The important fact to remember is that there are no direct trains to Bali. But a regular ferry service runs from Banyuwangi, the final terminus of the rail network, to Bali throughout the day. You can take a train till Banyuwangi and change for the ferry to Bali, the ferry terminal being 5 minutes away. The cost begins at Rp 1,70,000 one side and depends on where you board from and your destination.

Pack your bags, book your tickets and get set for the physical paradise and mystical experience that awaits you in Bali.
