Nestled in the lap of the imperial Himalayas, the journey to Kedarnath even though strenuous is worth the effort. Every means of transportation will take you till Gaurikund. It is at a distance of 14 km from Gaurikund and this journey is covered in many ways. But before we go there, lets look at the options available for you to reach Gaurikund. There are various ways of reaching Gaurikund:

  • By Air

The nearest airport to Kedarnath is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun which is 239 kms away from Kedarnath. From Dehradun you can hire a cab or taxi which could charge anywhere between INR 3500 to 4000. Make sure you have lots of books and music to accompany you during the long ride. The cabs could take anywhere between 7 and 8 hours depending on the traffic and weather conditions.

  • By Train

The nearest railway station to Gaurikund/ Kedarnath is Rishikesh, which is at a distance of 207 kms from Gaurikund. Other railway stations closer to Kedarnath are Kotdwara, Haridwar, Ramnagar and Kathgodam. Make sure you check the availability of trains before you start planning the trip to Kedarnath.

  • By Road

Kedarnath is easily accessible by road. Buses ply till Gaurikund from places like Rishikesh, Kotdwara, Haridwar and other hill stations of Kumaon and Garhwal hills. However, it is to be remembered that these services are only available up to Gaurikund. Driving your vehicle could be included in your options, but remember the drive up to Gaurikund could be exhaustive and tiresome.

Journey from Gaurikund: This is the trickiest part of the journey. All the buses and taxis terminate here. From here, it is a 14 kms trek to Kedarnath. Here, take a look at the various interesting and exciting options that you have:

  • By Mule

Themost humble and probably the most underrated domesticated animals, here's the mule at your service. As soon as you get down at Gaurikund, mule owners would surround you and start asking if you need a Mule for your trek. The prices that they quote are really high. Here's a mantra that you must use: bargain! After a bit of haggling, you both would settle down to a comfortable amount. Make sure that you have a look at the poor creature before you embark on the journey. Ensure that the humble animal is properly fed and has had enough rest to bear your weight. This could set you back anywhere between INR 1200 to 2000.

  • Pitthus

    Pitthus
is what the porters are called in the local lingo. If you feel fit enough to go on a 14 kms steep trek, then these porters would help you carry your luggage. They drop the visitors till their hotel or the Kedarnath Temple. The charges are anywhere between INR 700 to 1000.

  • Dolis

Has the journey been very tiring for you? Do not feel well enough to trek or ride a mule, then don't worry. Even for these circumstances, there are many doli wales or Palanquin bearers who you can hire. It is a wooden structure that is carried by four people on all sides. The price for this service can range anywhere between INR 4000 to 5000.

By Helicopter: If luxury and grandeur is your thing, then you can avail Helicopter services that operate daily from Phata and Agastya Muni. If you already are at Gaurikund then you can hire a cab till Phata which is at a distance of 18 kms away. Alternatively, if you can reach Agastya Muni in Rudraprayag district, you can avail the helicopter services. The major aviation company that runs helicopter services is Pawan Hans. You can make prior bookings for your journey.

  • Charges: INR 8,000 to 10,000
