From time constraints to ticket bookings, it is essential to know all the modes of travel to your holiday destination. Pondicherry is well connected to most major cities in the country. Take a look at some of the ways you can reach this lovely city:

  • By Air

If time is of essence and you don't want to spend time from your vacation on travelling then opt for a flight. There no direct flights to Pondicherry and the nearest airport is at Chennai, at a distance of 160 km. From here you can take a train or cab to Pondicherry, which will take you around 2.5 hours through NH 32. A cab will likely cost you INR 3,900 to INR 5,000, while a bus ride will cost you INR 400 to INR 700.

  • By Train

Though Pondicherry has a railway station but trains here are limited to or from Villipuram and Chennai. You could take a train to Chennai from any part of the country and then board the train bound to Pondicherry at the Chennai Central Railway station. However, if you are already in Tamil Nadu, then you could also take the train from the Egmore Railway station.

  • By Road

You will find Pondicherry to be very well connected by road. There are 2 routes you can take from Chennai. If you take the East Coast Road, that will take you to Pondicherry via Mamallapuram, you will be driving parallel to the coast of Bay of Bengal and have the ocean as your travel companion, with beaches and fishing villages on either side of the road. However, the ECR is a good choice only during daylight, as later it tends to get congest.

To avoid traffic congestions, day or night, take NH 45, also called the GST road. The traffic here tends to be channeled into 2 sections; one for cars and one for heavy vehicles like trucks. Once you reach Tindivanam on this route, take the road diversion to Pondicherry.

With plenty of options available, travelling to Pondicherry will not be a tiresome task. Simply pack your bags, book those tickets and head out for an awesome journey.
