Its when you travel through the well spaced roads lined with lush green trees, do you truly appreciate the marvel of urban design that Chandigarh is and how ahead of its time it was back when it was translated into a reality in 1954. You can take the following modes of transport for getting around in the city:

  • By Taxi

You can avail of the cab services provided by the hotel of your stay or hire one from the State transport authority, available at the railway stations and Airport. These are white, air-conditioned cabs that will pick you up from your doorstep and take you to your choice of places and sightseeing. Interestingly, these cabs come equipped with GPRS technology to monitor their locations continuously, ensuring their reliability. Their charges are INR 15/Km and can be contacted at +91-172-4141414.

  • By Auto rickshaws

Travelling in the regular autos can be a bit of hassle as there is no meter system and you will need to bargain; a bit of trouble when you are unfamiliar with the routes and destination. Alternatively, you could call the tuk-tuk autos. On the lines of the cab service above, Chandigarh has India’s first radio auto service wherein the autos are available 24x7 and come equipped with GPRS systems. Called Tuk-Tuk, the autos are distinct in their pink color and can be found at the railway station, airport and major shopping markets. Alternatively, they can be contacted at +91-172-4242424. They charge INR 10 for the first kilometer and INR 8 for subsequent kilometers.

  • By Bus

You could also explore the city in a local bus, available at Sector 17 and 43 bus terminals. Not only is it an economical option at INR 10 regardless of the destination, but also provides a hassle free travel, with the bus services being frequent and efficient. The tickets usually carry the map of the city on the back, so do remember to check them out in case you find yourself confused. The buses typically ply from 6 am to 10 pm.

To make sightseeing even more comfortable, Chandigarh Tourism runs a bus service Hop On Hop Off. Not only will you get to enjoy riding a double decker bus, but also once you have bought the ticket and want to spend more time at a particular spot of sightseeing than the bus service provides, you can choose to stay on and then board the ones that follow later, without having to purchase the ticket again. The bus begins its journey from Hotel Shivalik in Sector 17.

Smooth, navigable streets, punctuated with roundabouts decked with vibrant flowers and dolphin fountains spouting crystals of water, your ride through the city will be less of a drive and more of a cruise. Also, if you have got a day or two extra on your schedule, you can also visit the holy city of Amritsar by taking a direct Chandigarh to Amritsar taxi.
