With the onset of unexpected south west monsoons in Northern India came sudden chaos and mayhem. The cyclonic disturbances created and continue to create havoc in most parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. With the almost submersion of Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand and the ongoing two day rescue operation in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, things are yet far from settled.

With a number of tourists trapped in most regions, it is best to avoid the hilly regions as much as possible.

Places that cannot be visited at all are: Chardham Route, Sangla Valley, Dhanaulti, Chamoli, Kinnaur, Rishikesh, Shrinagar district in Uttarakhand, Kedarnath base camp and Ghattauli in Badrinath.

Places to avoid are: Dehradun, Joshimath, Manali. As heavy rains are expected by the end of the week, most routes would be closed for the general public.

If you are planning to travel anywhere in Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand, it would be strongly suggested to delay your holiday until the weather clears. Said to have improved a wee bit, the weather is still quite unpredictable. With rescue operations going on in full force, people are being shifted to safer zones for the time being. If you would like more information about people who have been rescued, you can check http://rudraprayag.nic.in/pages/display/191-kedarnath-relief-operation for an updated list of survivors. In case you’d like to contact someone in Uttarakhand and are unable to do so due to destroyed communication networks, you can get in touch at 0135-2710334, 011-2710335, 011-2710233 for more information.
