Alchi makes a great one to two days stopover destination for tourists visiting Leh. Like any mountainous region, Alchi has extremely harsh winters and mild summers. Have a look at the weather conditions throughout the year to make a more informed decision.

  • Summer (June to September)

Well, summers are not very summery in these parts, but nonetheless quite pleasant with the temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. With the natural beauty at its peak and all the highways leading to this village reopened and motorable, summer time marks the official tourist season. During June, the ground snow starts to melt and is completely gone by the end of this month. You may have to go to higher altitudes for snow. The initial summer months get some rainfall, but the overall weather is quite pleasant. However, once the sun goes down it gets colder. By September the mercury begins to fall. Children and elderly tourists may need special care and attention. Needless to say, you must pack good amount of woollens for your trip here. And your favourite sunblock lotion. What many do not realise is that the Ladakhi sun can be quite harsh, especially during summers. You can get a good tan much quicker by just walking around here, than spending hours sunbathing on the beaches of Goa.

  • Monsoon

Monsoon doesn’t have any particular season here, as it rains pretty much anytime during the year. In winters, the precipitation is in the form of heavy snowfall, while during summer months you might experience sporadic rainfalls, which are only a mild inconvenience. There is very little to no rainfall during the months of August and September. Still, add umbrellas and raincoats to your list of ‘things to pack’.

  • Winter (October to May)

If you love snow, you will get loads of it here, coupled with heavy snowfalls. In fact, that’s all you’ll see during this season. Add snow blocked roads and passes, frostbites, sun burns and more snow, and you’ll get the complete picture of what winters are like in Alchi. Not exactly a tourist season, right? Furthermore, the Manali-Leh highway remains closed during this whole season, so there is no point in planning your trip during this time. With temperatures below sub-zero (which can go down to -21°C during peak winter months of December to February) and blocked roads due to incessant snowfalls, you will have no pleasure in sightseeing or adventure sports. Even when the winter is not at its peak and the skies are clear, the sun rays are strong enough to give you sunburns. Frostbites are a common occurrence. Moreover, hotels start operating only during the tourist season in summers.

To sum it all up, the summer season (specially months of July and August) is the best time to visit this village. This is the time when the official tourist season starts and both the Leh-Manali and the Srinagar-Leh highways reopen. Bottom line is, it is always nicer and more convenient to carry out your sightseeing and shopping endeavours in a more hospitable climate, not to mention better socialising opportunities, be it with locals or other tourists.
