When you’re planning that dream holiday of yours, you naturally want everything to be just perfect. A perfect holiday depends quite a bit on how happy the weather gods are, for they determine the kind of experience you’ll have of the place. Koh Samui is no exception to this rule, and being close to the sea, is affected by the changing seasons. Though it enjoys a tropical climate all through the year, the following are the major seasons in Koh Samui:

  • Summer

The sun goes up and takes the mercury with it between the months of April and August. Temperatures usually hover around 30 degrees celsius or sometimes slightly over that, but if you can bear the heat, go right ahead. This could be an ideal time to visit the island if you’re travelling on a budget, since you’ll easily get the hotels of your choice at discounted rates (being off-season). May through September is generally more humid and slightly cooler because of those sudden thunderstorms and pre-monsoon showers. Of course, the month of April is when the thrilling Thai new year, Songkran is celebrated, with the water-fight helping you to keep it cool!

  • Monsoon

One of the most humid and rainiest months in Koh Samui are between September and November, when the monsoons really hit the island. Though the rainfall is intermittent, often in short spurts, but the precipitation and humidity level is quite high. You could visit Koh Samui during this season for the peace and seclusion, though it would be a bad time for diving because of reduced visibility.

  • Winter

If you can really call it that, the winter season in Koh Samui sees perhaps the best climate through the year. With very little rain, gentle seas and just the right level of humidity, this season lasts between December and February. The mercury stays pleasant all through the day, maybe dipping ever so slightly at night. This is also the liveliest and most vibrant time of the year in Koh Samui, with beach parties, adventure sports and tourists thronging from all over the world to experience the unique Thai culture.

You won’t need too long to figure out that Koh Samui is one of those all-year-around kinda destinations. But if you’re still looking for the absolute best time to visit the island, the months during December through February would win the contest hands down. Try and catch the Loy Kratong festival towards the end of November for an unbelievably enchanting experience. Basically, just pack your bags, head out and get ready for the time of your life!
