Many people believe that while on a pilgrimage, the weather serves as a test for one’s devotion and the dedication to the cause of the pilgrimage. This is believed true for Mathura too, a place that resonates a calm, spiritual aura at every corner you turn. But if you want the weather gods to be happy when you plan your trip, take a peek into the climate of Mathura and book your travel dates accordingly:

  • Summer

If you’re planning to travel between April and June, be prepared to face so serious heat and sunlight. The summer season here sees the mercury reaching as high as 45 degrees celsius, where even the minimum temperature is no less than 30 to 35 degrees celsius. Light cotton clothes, sunglasses and a solid sun-block cream will be your best friends during this time.

  • Monsoon

Love the pitter-patter raindrops and the fragrance of the first rain when it falls on parched soil? Visit Mathura during the months between July to September and see the green foliage come alive here. The city sees a good amount of rainfall, so make sure you carry comfortable slippers and an umbrella when you’re out sightseeing. This is also the time when Krishna Janmashtami (and 15 days after it, Radha Janmashtami) occurs, somewhere around August/September, when Mathura comes alive with devotees thronging to this place in large numbers. So make sure to book your hotels, trains and flights in advance for this time.

  • Winter

Climate-wise the best time to visit Mathura, the winter season in Mathura can be quite cold when at its peak. The mercury dips to nearly 12 degrees celsius, making woolens a necessity, especially during nights. A mild sunshine makes sightseeing during the day quite a delight, especially when you’re temple hopping while chanting radhe radhe. This season lasts between October and March, where March is also the month for the colourful festival of Holi that is celebrated with added fervour in Mathura.

Going by the climate, the best time to visit Mathura is during the months between October and March, which is ideal to be outdoors and explore the exciting sightseeing options in the city. March is usually the month when Holi occurs (according to the Hindu calendar), when Mathura sees a lot of visitors to celebrate the festival with complete excitement. The months of August/September are also special for Mathura, being the time when both Krishna and RadhaJanmashtami occur, adding an electrifying, festive aura to the town. Make sure you make your reservations in advance if you plan to travel during any of the above mentioned festivals.

Going by this, you’ll find it hard to pin-point a month which is totally forbidden for a trip to Mathura. The gates of this holy city remain open for you all through the year, waiting for you to plan that trip you’ve always wanted to take!
