What is the climate and the best time to visit Leh?

0 people found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

Most hill stations in India are decked in thick greenery and it is precisely the same that makes Leh all the more unique. This barren beauty has been the favourite of Bollywood with movies like Tashan and Three Idiots having been shot here, thanks to its stark mountains and the novelty factor of a cold desert. The weather scenario is like the follows:

  • Summer

During the months between April and September, the area experiences a relatively hotter temperature ranging between 20°C to 30°C. This is the best time to visit Leh as the environs are cool and breezy and most passes are open and accessible. Most hotels are also functional only during these times. It is advisable to carry your woollens even during this season as the weather here is unpredictable.

  • Winter

The winters in Leh are harsh and unbearable and the hill town becomes inaccessible during these months. The only way to reach here during these times is by air, as roads and passes are blocked due to the snowfall. The temperature in this period ranges between 5°C to -15°C and its inadvisable to visit Leh now until you are interested in extreme adventure activities (Ice skating on Indus river and mountaineering expeditions).

While you can do a host of things in summers around here, the winters offer limited activities and sightseeing options in Leh. Having said that, each weather sees Leh adorned in a unique charm and its upto you to decide what you want to witness! Wondering where the monsoon season went? Well, since Leh is a cold desert, it hardly sees any rainfall and any water that drops from the skies is highly unpredictable.
