Once an ordinary village, Bangkok today houses numerous folds of history within the maze of its towering skyscrapers. Originally a nondescript settlement on the banks of Chao Phraya River, Bangkok embarked on its remarkable journey in the 17th century when it was declared the capital of Siam by King Taksin the Great. After multiple shifts and expansions to the city base, King Rama named the city Krung Thep which functions as the official name of the city. You will be fascinated to know that Bangkok actually has the world’s longest name according to Guinness Book of World Records, with the Thai original being “Krung thep mahanakhon amorn ratanakosin mahintharayutthaya mahadilok popnoparat ratchathani burirom udomratchanivetmahasathan amornpiman avatarnsathit sakkathattiyavisnukarmprasit”.

Today a throbbing city with an electrifying nightlife, vibrant markets and sky defying buildings, Bangkok still holds to its cultural roots. Why, you ask? Because you can still spot the Thai sporting the traditional clothing and headgear, despite the international cuisines available locals still swear by their loved Thai cuisine, the festivals are celebrated with the same vigour and fervour and a thousand other hard to miss examples in Bangkok’s streets. A toast goes out to this ever growing, ever happening city, which never forgets where it came from. Revel in Thai warmth on your holiday to Bangkok and take back beautiful memories of magical Bangkok.
