The history of every place offers an insightful sneak peek into the unique culture, traditions and customs. The beautiful town of Gokarna is bestowed with an enthralling historical legend. Here is a glimpse of the beach town’s historical happenings.

  • Mystical beginnings

It is believed that Ravana performed intense Tapasya on Mount Kailash to receive the blessing of Lord Shiva in the form of the Atmalinga. Impressed by Ravana’s devotion, Lord Shiva grants the Atmalinga to Ravana but instructs him to carry it home and not place it on Earth even for a moment. If the Atmalinga is placed on Earth, it would embed itself in that very place.
Lord Vishnu feared that Ravana will misuse the power of the Atmalinga. He devised a plan whereby Lord Ganesh would distract Ravana and establish the Atmalinga elsewhere. Lord Ganesh disguised himself as a Brahmin boy as Ravana was approaching Gokarna. Lord Vishnu being aware of Ravana’s strict routine of performing his daily rituals instructed Lord Ganesh disguised as a Brahmin boy to be present at that moment. During the time of prayers, Ravana requested the Brahmin boy to hold the Atmalinga so that he continue with his prayers. Lord Ganesh agreed to do so but on the condition that he would do so until he could bear the weight of the Linga and hence call out to Ravana three times before setting the linga on earth.
During the prayers, Lord Ganesh called out to Ravana thrice before placing the linga on the ground and vanishing. Ravana then realised he had been tricked by the Gods and in anger tried to pull up the linga resulting in the scattering of the linga coverings.
The place where the linga was established is the site of the highly revered
    Mahabaleshwara temple.
