History of a place never tires to fascinate you, isn’t it? And if a place is as mystifying as Gwalior, there is certainly no escaping its glorious past. Let us have a look at what all went into shaping the culture of present day Gwalior city.

Touted as the tourist capital of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior city was founded in the 8th century by a prince Suraj Sen. Since then, the brilliance and charm of the city continued to attract many kingdoms. The Gurjara Pratiharas captured the city in the 10th century, from whom it went to the Kachwaha Rajputs in the 11th century. From the Rajputs to the Guptas, the city changed hands often till the arrival of the Mughals. The city shot to fame with its connection with the iconic musician Tansen, who was one of the Navratnas in the court of the Mughal king Akbar in the 15th century.

The city was taken over by the Marathas, before it first fell to the British Empire in 1780. The city of Gwalior played a crucial role in the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, and was taken over by the rebels for some time. Tantia Tope and Rani of Jhansi made the famous Gwalior Fort their battlefield.

At present, Gwalior includes the former state of Lashkar, which in the British times was an illustrious princely state. Famed for its glorious monuments and sacred temples, the city of Gwalior still retains an old-world charm of its own. The culture of music that it derived from Tansen flows in its veins and musicians view this city as the Mecca of music. The city has wonderfully blended modernity with its ancient heritage that form as the major parts of places to visit in Gwalior, and comes across as a major tourist hub not just of Madhya Pradesh but the whole of India. The education sector again has grown by leaps and bounds and many educational institutions have come up in the past few years. It also serves as a crucial industrial and commercial port.

All in all, Gwalior is an amazing story unfolded. Visiting the place is like exploring the yesteryear charm. Feel the magic!
