Though it is often said that there is not much which is known of the history of the beautiful city of Indore, whatever little is known, that is enough to engage anyone’s interest. The inquisitiveness about the city’s past can be very comfortably counted as one of the attributes of the city that attracts a lot of eyeballs.

The only strand of information that has been standard in all the accounts of the history of this place is that acquiring this city was a cause of a continuous strive between the British, the Marathas, and the Mughals. Isn’t that amazing in itself? It is said that the city was founded by a zamindar, Rao Nandlal Choudhary who in due course got convinced that the city is safe from all sides and hence set his centre there and consequently giving it the name of Indrapur.

Situated on one of the holiest pilgrimage routes in Madhya Pradesh, Indore was acquired by the Marathas in a war against the Afghan invader, Ahmad Shah Abdali. But this was also not long lived as they had to surrender the city to the British for peace. Eventually, the British handed over the city to the rulers of the Holkar Dynasty. Maharaja Malhar Rao Holkar was leading the dynasty at that time.

The beautiful city was under the rule of the Holkar Dynasty till the time British were ruling the country. After the independence, the city was integrated with many other cities to form the Madhya Bharat, now known as Madhya Pradesh.

Modern-day Indore is now the commercial capital of the state of Madhya Pradesh. You might ask how is that accomplished. Nice question. That is because it is one of the biggest garment trading districts in India. Because of the numerous automobile plants that are situated here, the city has also got the nickname of the Detroit of India. Because of its varied rulers, Indore gained from several cultures and ideologies. Said to be one of the very few cities in the world that were planned by a woman, Indore has its major cultural influence from the Holkar Dynasty maybe because of their long sustained rule of over 220 years, till the time free India came into existence. The structures in the city speak too much about the grandeur of the dynasty and how they seem to have flourished during their rule.

The city today can be well described as one of the few cities that serve the best of both worlds to everyone visiting the place. A true blend of culture and modern aspirations, Indore is not only known for its monuments, temples, traditional skills and art forms but is also climbing up the ladder of being a fine urban city.

The people are warm, culturally sound and not to miss great foodies. What else could one ask for in a city, right? So, don’t wait anymore.
