Located along the Malabar Coast in the state of Kerala, Calicut is now better known as Kozhikode. It has been seen as the 'City of Spices' ever since the ancient times, when it traded in spices like black pepper with the Chinese, Jews and Arabs.

During the middle ages, the city used to be the capital of the independent empire of the Zamorins. The phenomenal Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama is said to have set foot on this land in May, 1498. The city hosted the conquest of the Britishers in 1615. The influx of the French and the Dutch is said to have followed in the later part of the 15th century. The name of the city also inspired the name of the famous English textile, Calico.
It has aptly inherited its commercial past and much of economy here is business-oriented in the present times. The economy of the city depends also on the export of local labour to the Middle East nations. Malayalam is the mother-tongue of this region and folk songs and dance add to its cultural richness.

The abundant bazaars, beaches and the wildlife resources seem to have been the face of this city since many years now. The population is warm and simple-minded.
