Not many of you must be knowing about Lachen, a small town in Sikkim that enjoys a picture perfect location, surrounded by snow covered mountains and well marked by deep gorges of Lachen Chu. This land of Bhutia and Tibetan settlement is a home to Lachenpas, a hospitable Sikkimese Bhutia Community, which will make you a total fan of their heart warming gestures. Painted with rich florain Summers and snow covered mountains in Winters, this aesthetically rich town was made open to tourist towards the end of 2000 and is gradually developing as a famous tourist destination. Before this, Lachenwas inhabited only during winters by people who spent their summers on the alpine pastures at the boundary of Tibet. It will interest you to know that it has an age old system of self-governance named Dzumsa that dates back to seventeenth century, where the villagers elect a group of people to represent them and manage village affairs.

You would surely want to take back a souvenir in the form of the traditional dress of men known as the Bakhu, a loose cloak type garment with full sleeves or a Honju, the traditional dress of women which is a full sleeve blouse with a loose gown type garment worn over it. The womenfolk are very fond of heavy jewellery made of pure gold and no wonder you will spot them flaunting their exquisite collection. The rich culture of Lachen can be seen in their various festivals and fairs like Chaam, Lossong, Lhabab, Dhuchen et al, held round the year.

These places to visit in Lachen will surprise you as it unfolds its spellbinding beauty and rich culture and tradition.
