  • The city of Nawabs
    During the Mughal era, the emperors began to appoint Nawabs to ensure smooth administration in their respective provinces. Mohammad Amir Saadat Khan was appointed the viceroy of Lucknow, an important province during that time. The powerful dynasty that followed guided the future of Lucknow. Under the rule of the fourth Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, the city flourished unbelievably. The world of art witnessed a dramatic change which is still seen in present Lucknow. From poetry to dance to brilliant architecture, everything found a new meaning. The Chhota Imambara, Bara Imambara and Rumi Darwaza are only some of the monuments that were erected during this time. As the British rule began, Lucknow was signified as an administrative capital. With numerous small uprisings during the end of British rule by Indians, Lucknow was witness to a lot of tragedies and mishaps. The famous Khilafat movement found its base in this very city.
  • Post independence, Lucknow was established as the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh by the then Government of India.
