A city that is an explosion of monuments, colours, traditions and crafts in front of you, Udaipur was established as the final capital of the Mewar Kingdom in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh. According to common folklore, the emperor was in the mountainous Aravalis for a hunting expedition when he encountered a hermit in the wilds. When he paid his respects, the hermit blessed the king and asked him to build a palace in that every spot, saying the palace will always remain protected. Taking his advice, Maharana Udai Singh commanded the construction of Udaipur's first palace.

As fate would have it, within no time of the construction of this palace, the Maharana lost his home state Chittor to the mughal forces. His army and subjects then fled to Udaipur and then started their life from scratch, slowly building what is seen as a majestic city today. An interesting fact about the Mewar royal family is that it is one of the oldest royal families and is supposed root of the Nepali and Kashmiri royals.
