Bundled in legends, this pristine abode of deep valleys and majestic mountains is certainly a delight to visit. Slowly emerging as a popular tourist destination for adventure sports, Uttarkashi is a pit stop for pilgrims visiting Gangotri.   • The beginning
    The mention of this alluring town can be traced back in the pages of the great Indian epic Mahabharata. It is believed that a sage, Jada Bharata, performed penances at Uttarkashi. The tribes of the region, from Kiratas to the Pratanganas are also mentioned in the Upayana Parva of Mahabharata. The town was considered to be the ideal place to attain perfection in vedic scriptures and chants. In ancient times, the sages, away from the rituals of daily life, sought refuge in Uttarkashi’s heavenly beauty.

  • As time passed
    This small town came into focus during the 1800’s when the Gorkhas of Nepal invaded the the Garhwal region. The constant border troubles that followed prompted the British generals to capture Garhwal from the Gorkhas.
    The present day Uttarkashi was created on February 24th in the year 1960.
