Gurramkonda was a fort town for the Vijayanagara empire that was under the rule of under King Sree Krishna Deva Raya. The word Gurramkonda comes from joining two Kannada words - 'Gurram' meaning horse and 'Konda' meaning hill. This was named so because the rulers rode horses to reach the fort, that was located at the top of a steep hill. A local lore about this place is that, when the kingdom was attacked, the king had thrown diamonds and other precious gems from the royal treasury, all across the hill, which are still believed to be lying around the area buried deep in the earth.
