Lush greenery, sloping roads and trails through the woods will make this holiday to Ranikhet a peaceful, rejuvenating experience. A place that has so much beauty in store also, quite naturally, has its own unique history and legends.

Its awe-inspiring beauty will strike you, as it struck the Katyuri queen, Rani Padmini, according to one legend. She was so taken in by the charm of this little hamlet that her husband, Raja Sudhardev, christened it as Ranikhet, or literally, the queen's meadow. It was then ruled by local Kumaoni kings and fell under the Nepalese kingdom, before the British claimed it in 1816. They then set the town up as a base for the Kumaon Regiment in 1869. It was a popular summer retreat for the British and at one point, the then viceroy to India, Lord Mayo, even considered shifting their Summer Capital in India to Ranikhet from Shimla.

Taking on this military legacy, Ranikhet now continues to be the headquarters for the Kumaon Regimental Centre (KRC) and Naga Regiment of the Indian Army, and like most other cantonment areas, is maintained by the army itself.

With this fascinating, royal history of Ranikhet in context, your trip is sure to be that much more magical, memorable and legendary.
